Israel's three largest hamburger chains, McDonald's, Burgeranch and Burgerim, have announced plans to exclusively use mehadrin-level glatt kosher meat.
The change, announced last week, is a direct result of an initiative by the IDF Rabbinate amid an ongoing food donation campaign since the beginning of the conflict with Hamas.
The IDF Rabbinate's initiative came in response to religious soldiers' request for glatt kosher food. Although the chains are moving toward mehadrin kosher meat, it is important to note that many of their branches will continue to operate without kashrut certification. These branches, which serve dairy products as well as meat and are open on Shabbat, aim to serve non-religious customers.
The transition to mehadrin kosher meat represents the culmination of months of effort, part of a broader goal of ensuring that all soldiers, regardless of their dietary needs, have access to appropriate kosher food options. The effort has also seen the participation of global kashrut organizations such as OU Kosher, underscoring the widespread support.
Additionally, we have identified a widespread trend of non-kosher restaurants in Israel becoming kosher since the October 7 attacks by Hamas.
