A California supplement company has recalled a batch of children's vitamins because they contain high or “super potent” doses of vitamin D that could cause vomiting, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in an alert Thursday. Is.
Nordic Naturals, based in Watsonville, a city near Santa Cruz in central California, said Saturday that about 3,800 bottles of its Baby Vitamin D3 liquid were affected by the recall, a fifth of which have already been returned by retailers.
The FDA warns, “Long-term use of Baby Vitamin D3 Liquid may potentially lead to elevated vitamin D levels, resulting in vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, frequent urination, and inability to thrive in infants.” Might be possible.”
newsweek A representative from Nordic Naturals was contacted via email for comment Tuesday.
While the body naturally produces vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, it is often insufficient in the colder months and in areas further from the equator. It can be found naturally in foods like oily fish, red meat and eggs.
Vitamin D deficiency can impair the development of healthy bones, teeth and muscles, and deficiency of the chemical can lead to bone deformities such as rickets.
However, too much vitamin D over a long period of time can cause too much calcium to build up in the body, which can weaken bones and damage some internal organs.
According to the alert, a manufacturing error led to high levels of vitamin D in the products, which typically contain 10 micrograms per 0.76 fluid ounce bottle. It said no adverse medical events were reported and the recall was entirely a result of error.
The affected products, which are marketed as dietary supplements for infants up to one year of age, have lot number 234909 and their expiration date is December 2025.
The FDA said Nordic Naturals had taken “immediate action” by notifying distributors and retailers, as well as customers directly via email, to arrange for the return of the products.
The federal agency warned that customers who still have the product should stop using it immediately and return it to the place where it was purchased.
“Nordic Naturals prioritizes consumer safety, reaffirming its dedication to quality products,” the company said as part of the alert. “We are rapidly removing the recalled items from the market to protect the health and well-being of our customers.”
This is not the first time that vitamin-enriched products have been recalled. In April 2021, a New Jersey-based household goods manufacturer recalled a variety of gummy vitamins after consumers reported finding “metal mesh material” in the product.
Previously, in December 2018, the FDA found that six different brands of dog food contained potentially dangerous levels of vitamin D, triggering several voluntary recalls.
